Dove of Peace Mission Center

We are privileged to serve our great God as volunteers in this mission. Our primary purpose is to radiate the love of Jesus Christ. We prayerfully invest ourselves in this mission, and endeavor to honor God in all we do by serving those in need.

Who We Are

Lutheran Disaster Response

Dove of Peace Mission Center is a joint operation of Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) and the Lutheran Churches of the New Orleans East / Slidell area. The facilities and work are primarily funded, supplied, and maintained through LDR, under the “umbrella” of Lutheran Social Service of the South Lutheran Social Services of the South, which is the Louisiana unit of Lutheran Disaster Response nationally as well as Lutheran World Relief – Human Care, and the Orphan Grain Train. In addition, we receive direct support, equipment, supplies and funds from other organizations and hundreds of individuals around the country.

Dove of Peace Mission Center Accommodations

We have five upstairs bedrooms that house between 4 and 10 volunteers each. Each of the bedrooms is equipped with bunk beds (including linens, pillows, and towels.) They are two full bathrooms within the church building. A shower trailer is also on site for your use, as well as a full kitchen and laundry facilities. We also have a community room with a sectional sofa, five computer terminals with internet access, wireless internet and a big screen TV with satellite TV service. Those unable to traverse non-handicap accessible facilities may have difficulties.

In the new fellowship building, we are able to house and additional 40 volunteers on raised airbeds. Linens and towels are provided as they are in the church building. This facility has six bathrooms and showers (three for men, three for women).

Mission Center Maintenance

In order to offer you the cleanest and most comfortable accommodations possible, we ask that each group work on site throughout the week. We need at least two people each day to stay and clean the facilities. This includes, mopping and vacuuming, cleaning bathrooms, doing laundry, etc. We usually house three to four groups each week, so it works out to one to two days a week that each groups needs to provide cleaners. The day you clean most likely will be the day you will be asked to cook as well.

Peace Lutheran Church has also given their entire worship and Sunday school space over to Lutheran Disaster Response for the mission center. In return, Lutheran Disaster Response feels a commitment to help Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church do repairs caused by the hurricane as well as make needed upgrades to the facilities. Projects vary from brush and tree removal to painting to tool maintenance. At orientation, we will present tasks that are in need of being completed. If your group is capable of doing these please let the staff know.

We are so glad that you are interested in joining us in the continued disaster recovery response to Hurricane Katrina! Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
